Ask Miss Victory Violet- Pinup On A Budget

Dear Miss Victory Violet,
I’m almost eighteen and I’m thinking of moving out to go to university next year. Naturally with all the fees I won’t have much money left over.
I’ve noticed your wonderful sense of style am I’d love to know if you have any advice on how to live a vintage lifestyle on a budget? I’d also like to know if you could help me with where best to look for cheap but good quality vintage items to decorate my accommodation with?
Thank you so much,
Love from Lois

Dear Lois,

Wow, what a exciting time it must be for you! I’m in a similar boat at the moment, my husband and I are saving for a big 6 week long trip next year so I can’t buy too much!

Apart from the usual thrift shops, there are a few online places that you can get second hand vintage reproduction clothing. An obvious place is eBay but there are also multiple facebook forums where ladies sell their used dresses. Here’s a few of my favourites-

PUG Swap/Sell Group
Hell Bunny Clothing Buy, Swap & Sell
Wheels and Dollbaby Swap/Sell
I have a Vivien Of Holloway Dress and love to wear it
Desperately Seeking Trashy Diva

All the experiences I have had within these forums have been positive ones but there are unfortunatley always a few bad eggs who will try to scam unsuspecting ladies. Always use Paypal to pay for goods as this way you are protected for 45 days from payment.

There are also a couple of cheaper clothing companies. These companies can be hit and miss in terms of quality but are generally pretty good for the price. I’d recommend looking up Lindy Bop, Chic Star and Hell Bunny

Also there are always great sales on at certain times of the year! Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) is usual pretty awesome for online deals but keep an eye out at Boxing Day and other major holiday periods. I try to save my pennies especially for Black Friday so I can take advantage of the specials.

Now in terms of decorating your residence, I love the look of old glass bottles and bunting!  You should be able to find a myriad of glass bottles at your local second hand shop and bunting can be easily made using cheap scraps of material. Find some old, beat up furniture and paint them a bright pop of colour or a more subtle pastel to give them new life. For more inspiration, check out these pinterest boards.

Have fun!

  1. Thank you so much for your great suggestions. I’ll have to take a look at the websites and Pinterest boards. I hope you have a lovely trip with your husband and thank you for sharing vintage and pinup ideas on your blog. I love it! Xxx

  2. I’m just going in to my third year and I’d advise you to keep an eye out on Amazon and eBay, sometimes sellers have only a couple of dresses left in each size and they sell them off really cheaply! I’ve managed to get Hell Bunny dresses for under £20 when the RRP is about £40 odd!! You just have to be clever with your shopping and wait 🙂
