Bernie Dexter is well known for her gorgeous selection of colourful prints on her dresses. I’ve slowly been building a bit of a collection over the years and get very excited when a new fabric or style is released!
The Cherry Tree Lane print is one that is very popular and sells out super fast! About a year ago, I hunted down the Pearl Dress in this print from the UK What Katie Did website. I wanted this print so badly, that I ordered the last remaining dress they had, a size medium, knowing it would be too big. I have never been in love with the fit of the Pearl Dress (being too big doesn’t help) so when I saw that Australian retailer That Shop had the Paris Dress in Cherry Tree Lane Print, I got very excited!
I already own a Paris dress from Bernie Dexter so I knew I would like the fit of it better than the Pearl. I ummed and ahhed over it for a while as it seemed silly to buy a dress that I already have the same print of in another style… and Bernie Dexter dresses aren’t cheap!
Then That Shop released the Paris Dress in Serenity Bridge Print (don’t you just love the names!) and the beautiful green hues totally sucked me in. I decided to order both with some Christmas money I’d been saving to treat myself.
That Shop has been operating on the Gold Coast in Australia for over 11 years. They have 3 stores located in Coolangatta, Woolloongabba and Robina Town Centre and choose not to have a online shop, preferring to interact with customers on their Facebook Page.
I first became aware of That Shop a few years ago when I ordered the exclusive Blue Rose Birdie Dress from Pinup Girl Clothing from them.
Everytime I’ve enquired via the Facebook page, I’ve always had a prompt and helpful response from one of the staff. They really pride themselves on providing a exceptional customer experience. They are very knowledgable on all the products they carry and can recommend sizing and know if something is running big or small.
I am either a small or medium in Bernie Dexter dresses depending on the style. Since I already had a medium in the Paris Dress, the That Shop ladies recommended I got for the same.
Shipping was very prompt, the packages arrived in New Zealand in less than a week! The dresses are absolutely gorgeous in person, the colours are so bright and the I just love looking at the detailed prints.
The size mediums were the right choice- They are pretty big in the waist but I wouldn’t be able to fit my bust into a small. The Paris Dress features a peasant-style bust with thin straps, pockets and a full skirt.
The length of these dresses are about 2 inches shorter than my other Paris dress, I’m guessing because of the width and print of the fabric.
With so many beautiful colours and tones in these dresses, you can accessorise with so many different colours!
For the Cherry Tree Lane one, I’m wearing my light pink Vivien Of Holloway petticoat, hot pink pumps from Novo, a pink belt that came with one of my other Bernie Dexter Styles and a pretty blue orchid from The Sophisticated Lady. You could add in pops of green or blue also with this dress!
For the Serenity Bridge print, I choose to highlight the subtle orange in the print so wore my peach Vivien of Holloway petticoat, belt from my Pinup Girl Clothing Harley Dress, Netty Pump in Peach from Pinup Girl Clothing. Instead of also going for a orange hair flower, I picked out my beautiful pinky-purple orchid from The Sophisticated Lady to match the iddy biddy purple flowers in the print.
Now let’s talk about the fit of the dress- The bust is quite shallow on and my bust does not actually sit perfectly in there. The band underneath the ruching cuts into my bust slightly which you can only really tell on a side angle thanks to the busy print.
The shallow bust combined with the straight around bustline of the dress means it probably won’t work well for the super duper busty. I’m a 32E for reference and whilst the shape and style isn’t perfect, I’ll get over it because it looks so pretty!
One thing I would love to see in Bernie Dexter styles is adjustable straps… it would make such a difference!
These dresses are exclusive to That Shop and come in sizes XS to XL. They are AU$199 each with international postage available. If you are unsure of what size you’d need, have a chat to the amazing ladies on Facebook and I’m sure they will be able to help you out! For reference, my bust measures 36 inches and waist measures 27″.
If you like the look of one of these dresses, I would recommend purchasing sooner rather than later! These styles and prints are very popular and stock flies out the door. Also because theses are done exclusively for That Shop, there is no way of knowing if they will be available again in the future!
Thank you to my very talented cousin Lex of AM Photography for snapping these photos at Cornwall Park one Sunday afternoon! We managed to avoid the showers of rain, cow poop and bumble bees tailing us and get some really lovely shots!
