The Malibu Tiki Dress

The Malibu Tiki Dress has, in my mind, become one of Pinup Girl Clothing and Deadly Dames most iconic dresses. It’s been around for years, the late Amy Winehouse even wore it on stage before she passed. It left the website for a period of time and came back in 2012 after Micheline Pitt redesigned it and bought out new colourways.

I bought the Red/Blue version to wear in Hawaii two years ago and am now the proud owner of the Green/Lavender colourway!

To shoot this dress, I knew we need a very tropical location, so when Elizabeth J Photography and I stumbled upon this tropical oasis inside the Auckland Botanical Gardens while shooting for Pigtails and Pirates and so I knew we had to come back for the Malibu Tiki!

When designing the Malibu Tiki Dress, Deadly Dames creator Micheline Pitt was heavily influenced by her collection of vintage Alfred Shaheen,
Surf and Sand and Miss Hawaii pieces. The original Malibu Tiki had a halterneck strap but with this redesigned version, Micheline changed that to adjustable straps like the Vamp Dress and added a bolero.

Β The Malibu Tiki is made of a rich cotton sateen, high quality material as you’d expect from Pinup Girl Clothing. It has a very similar bust to the Vamp Dress in terms of construction and shape, the only major difference is that the detail border piece at the bust isn’t sew completely down like the Vamp.

It’s a great shaped bust with moulded cups and is very supportive!

The skirt is a slight tulip shape with a wrap around feature. It has a tie attached to one side of the skirt that you wrap around the back and tie on the other side to secure it. The underneath piece however is still sewn in place so there’s only minimal risk of flashing if a gust of wind happens to blow!

Because of the skirt and the wrap style, I find I need to size up to a large for my hips – the medium just doesn’t have enough fabric to get around my hips and still hang nicely.
It says on the website that this dress runs small and to size up if you are in-between sizes. Interestingly, Β the red/blue version fitted really well in a size large when I bought it 2 years ago, even through the bust.

However the large of this colourway was significantly bigger, so I had to get the bust and waist taken in.

I accessorised the Malibu Tiki with perfectly purple orchids from The Sophisticated Lady, wooden bangles from Buana Satu on Auckland’s K’Road, bamboo bangles from Vivien of Holloway, lavender parasol from Amber La Vintage and of course a coconut to give as much tropical paradise vibe as possible!

To complete the look further, nab yourself the adorable Lavender Wicker BagΒ and the Wooden Tiki Heel from Pinup Girl Clothing.

The Malibu Tiki Dress is perfect for a tropical island escape, a casual summer evening or just if you feeling like bringing out your inner Hawaiian goddess! It comes in this gorgeous Green/Lavender, Blue/Red, Orange and Plain Black. It retails for US$140 on the Pinup Girl Clothing Website and goes from sizes XS to 4XL.

Thank you again to Elizabeth J Photography for bringing my vision of a tropical oasis to life! You never disappoint!
