I have fallen head of heels for Emmy Designs. After featuring the Susie Q Cardigan and Twirly Swirly Skirt back in August, I’m so excited to bring another gloriously 1940’s outfit to the blog… I think this has to be one of my favourite sets of all time.
For this shoot, Elizabeth J Photography and I went to the fabulous Abbeville Estate which is actually where my husband and I got married. I brought along my new vintage style bicycle which I recently treated myself to after years of wanting one. The result is like being transported right back to the 1940s…
I adore the Emmy cardigans and I am so sad that it’s going to be a number of months before it’s cool enough in New Zealand for me to wear them. The Ice Skater Cardigan features a classic cable knit and whilst the Susie Q cardigan was a cotton/modal blend, the Ice Skater is 70% wool and 30% acrylic. Thanks to the wool, it is a little warmer than the Susie Q, plus it feels thicker, better quality and like it will hold it’s shape really well.
From looking at the size chart on the Emmy website (be sure to check the size charts for each garment as they vary), my 36″ bust and 27.5″ waist put me between the 34/36 and 38/40 size. The ladies at Emmy advised to go with the 38/40 to avoid it being too tight and I think it was a good choice. It has a little bit of room, enough for a authentic 1940s feel but not too baggy. I own the Susie Q in the same size which is much larger in the waist.
This colour is unfortunately sold out but there is still the Mustard, Leaf Green and Dusty Blue available for €113.21. Alternatively, Revival Retro has some sizes left in the wine.
These cardigans really do lend themselves well to pairing with a blouse underneath. The Hollywood Boulevard Blouse in Wine was a great match for the Burgandy of the Ice Skater Cardigan and I love the little peek of the collar. I know that cardigan clips are technically for when you are wearing your cardigan open, but I think they work so well clipped to the collar like I have in these photos.
This pair I found on Etsy, you can read my blog post all about cardigan clips here.
The Hollywood Boulevard Blouse has cute clusters of 3 polka dots, a round collar, puffy sleeves and lovely dart detailing at both the shoulder and at the waist. I’m wearing the size 38 which is a little roomy, I probably should have the 36 but it’s not as noticeable when tucked in.
This blouse is €84.80 and once again, comes in other colours and prints. I really wish I hadn’t missed out on the Acorn Blue version before it sold out of my size, it’s such a pretty print!
To finish the outfit off, the Sweetest Swing Skirt in Brown Salt and Pepper! This has everything I love in a skirt- Fullness, the perfect length, hidden pockets and belt loops! Made out of a textured, woven poly/spandex fabric, the muted Salt and Pepper lends itself well to the 1940s palette although the full shape is more 1950s. My waist was just a touch too big for the size 36, so I went with a 38. It’s a little loose but thanks to the belt loops, not a issue at all.
The Sweetest Swing Skirt is €127.20 and also comes in Wine Salt and Pepper.

I feel like I cannot express how much I adore this outfit and cannot wait to wear it next winter! For now, at least I’ll be able to wear the Blouse and Skirt on their own without the cardigan.
Thank you to Abbeville Estate for letting us roam around the beautiful grounds, it’s a bit of a dream location with all of it’s variety of backdrops. It was fun to be shooting and be able to say ‘this is where I threw my bouquet’ or ‘this is where Matt and I had our “first look”‘.
A big thank you also to Elizabeth J Photography for capturing this outfit so perfectly, she really brought my vision to life!
