The Mermaid Song Dress by Sarsparilly

I feel like Australia is the hidden treasure trove of vintage reproduction companies! I just keep finding out about new ones which is especially fabulous for resident Australian pinups since their dollar isn’t doing too great against other currencies.

My latest find is a brand called Sarsparilly which is designed and run by the lovely Maria and when she offered me to give one of her creations a try, I couldn’t refuse!
Sarsparilly is a made to measure business so everything is lovingly created as you order it. Most of the fabrics are on the quirkier side, there’s lots of novelty prints like Flamingos, Alice + The Tardis, Unicorns and even a Sound of Music one!

As much as I love gazing upon and appreciating these adorably fun prints, I knew they weren’t quite ‘me’, so I went with the more subtle print of the ‘A Mermaid Song Dress‘. The peachy colour, scale-like scallop print and neckline were all what attracted me to this dress first. It seemed like the perfect summer dress and a bit of a change from my usual floral go-to.

It features a full gathered skirt, gathering on both the front and back, pockets (YES!) and a lovely white trim along the neckline and straps.

I measure 37″ in the bust and 27″ in the waist so according to the Sarsparilly size chart, my bust is in between a S and M and waist is inbetween a XS and S. After consulting with Maria, she recommended a size small would be best and since everything is made to measure, adjusted the waist a little so it would fit better.

I’m over the moon with the fit, I absolutely love the shape of this dress. It’s fully lined in both the bust and skirt and since it’s made out of a cotton, there’s no stretch to it so the fit does have to be pretty spot on. You can tell when putting this dress on that there’s been a lot of thought gone into the construction and design. It totally moulds to my curves and a love the gathered neckline.

The other thing that I really appreciate with this dress is the fit around the armpit. Sometimes with skinny strapped dresses such as this, I feel like you get a funny bulge around the armpit depending on the fit and what type of bra you are wearing. Now, don’t get me wrong, I certainly won’t let this stop me from wearing a dress as I know it’s a totally normal thing to happen to most women. But I do appreciate that the fit and design of this dress is so top-notch that it covers that area up so there’s no need to even give it a second thought.

The Mermaid Song Dress comes in XS-3XL and because everything is made to order, you do have to wait 4-6 weeks. This dress retails for AU$290 which I know for most of my readers is on the high end of what they would spend on a dress. However, I do believe that the construction and fit of this dress is one of the best I’ve had recently and if you are in Australia, you’ll know that you can easily spend that same amount after currency conversion and shipping. Sarsparilly do offer ‘AfterPay’ where you can pay it off over 4 fortnightly payments which is pretty great!

Thank you to Elizabeth J Photography for the perfect photos inside Hotel DeBrett. This little area along with the dress created a little bit of a Mad Men vibe and everything complimented each other perfectly!

  1. Hi, I’m new to your blog and I’m so glad I found it. I absolutely love this dress, you look so beautiful in it. The colour is what drew me in first and the ‘scallop’ design. It’s certainly something I’d be happy to save for. I’ve been sewing for a couple of years and 1950s is one of my favourite era’s and I’d dress in vintage all the time if I didn’t have three little boys running around after me. I have already ripped a couple of vintage dresses at playgrounds, argh! Sarsparilly has some amazing things, I’ll certainly keep it in mind.

  2. What a gorgeous dress! I have just been noticing Sarsparilly lately, and I am so in love with the dresses. It sounds like they are well worth the money! You look fantastic.
