When I was just a baby pinup, I attended the first ever Very Vintage Day Out in 2011. To me, it was incredible to see so many ladies and gents dressed the same and to be able to shop some of my favourite brands right there and then.
I remember watching the Miss Vintage New Zealand Competition, seeing Michelle aka Lady Kittyhawk take out the title and thinking “golly gosh I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough for that!”
Little did I know that just a few short years later, I too would be crowned Miss Pinup New Zealand at VVDO in 2014 and be asked to come back and judge the contest in both 2016 and 2017. 6 years later, The Very Vintage Day Out is no longer just a day- it’s a weekend! And 6 years later, it’s become fully entrenched as the highlight of the Pinup and Vintage social calendar.
After a change in ownership at the start of the year, the new captains at the helm really pushed VVDO to a new level. Two days, a bigger and better venue, more sellers and overall a incredible weekend.
I was thrilled to not only be able to make it back to New Zealand for the event, but to be also asked to be a VVDO Ambassador – complete with a fancy blue sash! I did live hair demonstrations on stage on both days and also got to judge the Miss Pinup New Zealand Competition. The competition was fierce to say the least, judging it is both a honour and a curse as the calibre each year increases! All the ladies did a wonderful job with Velvet DeColette being crowned the winner, followed by Mrs Greatnews as Runner Up and Miss Kitty Kaos as People’s Choice.
I had a wonderful time at The Very Vintage Day Out – thank you Ruth and Sheena for having me! Next years date has already been set, it’ll be on the 4th and 5th of November at the ASB Showgrounds and I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to make it back to New Zealand for it again!
